SoWe Restaurant & Bar

A requirement of Dave’s when we decided to move was that we had to have a neighborhood bar.  After living in a residential area for two years in his old apartment, he was ready to live somewhere he could walk home from.  You know, a bar where everybody knows your name… that sort of thing.

In the month we’ve lived in the city, we’ve found tons of great restaurants and bars in walking distance from our apartment.  We’re loving the city life.  Of course it took Dave going away for a boys weekend for me to discover what I think will be one of our very favorite neighborhood bars.  Sorry Dave!  We’ll just have to go back!

I took a walk with my friend Emily down the street to SoWe Restaurant and Bar for dinner this past weekend.  We knew it was going to be a great place when I saw the specials written on a pig shaped chalkboard.

We started the meal off with drinks from the cocktail list.  Emily ordered the Fall Fiz (Vodka, Dried Cranberries, Ginger) and I chose to get the Gazer (Hendricks Gin, White Cranberry, St. Germaine, and Cucumber) at the recommendation of our server.  We really liked both of our drinks.  Both drinks were refreshing and not too sweet.  They were pretty too, mine with a light green color and Em’s with bright red cranberries covering the bottom.

For starters, we ordered the Brussel Sprouts and Sweet Potato Fries.  The fries were so good, fresh and cooked to perfection with sea salt and an amazing sweet maple dipping sauce.  The Brussels are cooked with Bacon and Red Bell Peppers in Balsamic Vinegar.  I could eat like three servings of these.  YUM!

I. Love. BRUSSELS. Especially when they're cooked with Bacon. MMM

Next up, Emily ordered the special appetizer of the night for her entree- Fish Tacos.  They sounded too good to pass up!  Em loved the fish tacos which were stuffed with grilled Tilapia, Mango Salsa, and a creamy Jalapeno sauce.  I couldn’t resist trying out the SoWe Burger after seeing someone else’s picture of it on Yelp.  The fries were amazing.  I somehow managed to cut my burger and take half home since it was so incredibly massive (a feat i attempt often but rarely accomplish).  The signature 1/2lb burger comes on a toasted brioche bun.  It’s stuffed with fried Peppers and Onions, Sharp Cheddar, Smoked Bacon, and a delicious Horseradish Mayo.  This is a burger you do not want to miss.  OMG!

Wish this was on the menu, not just a special

I think we did a pretty good job of finding a great neighborhood bar with yummy food and drinks!  The atmosphere was laid back and the service was great.  SoWe is a place I’ll definitely be coming back to… I’m thinkin’ next time for some Tuesday $1 Oysters and Quizzo!

Trader Joe’s Carne Asada

Trader Joe’s makes an amazing pre-marinated steak that I love to pick up every once in a while. It’s a great change of pace from my typical asian-flavored marinades I normally use.  This Carne Asada packs a PUNCH of Mexican flavor.  It is a bit spicy but super flavorful.  The steak is also sliced so thin that all you have to do is put it over some high heat (pan or grill) and it’ll be done in just a few minutes.

I cooked this batch up with some Parmesan Garlic French Fries and Sauteed Spinach.

For the Parmesan Garlic French Fries, I took a good ol’ bag of frozen fries my Dad keeps in the house and fried them in a pan with some Sunflower Seed Oil.  I added Minced Garlic, Sea Salt, Black Pepper, and some Smoked Paprika.  Once the fries were all crisped up, I removed them from the pan onto a wad of paper towels and shook off some of the oil.  Next, they went into a brown paper bag with a few shakes of Reduced Fat Parmesan Cheese.  I added a few shakes of Sea Salt too.  YUM.  What a great combination with the garlic and parmesan… seriously yum.

The spinach was frozen also, I just took a big hunk of it and threw it into a saucepan with maybe 1/4-1/2 Cup of water.  I let it cook over medium-high heat until all of the spinach “melted” and was stirable.  It is a pain in the ass (using frozen spinach) but you have to drain the water.  I take a colander and cover it with a few layers of paper towels, then use some paper towels for my hands and squeeze it all out.  Careful though, it can be really hot!  When serving, add a squeeze of lemon juice, a few sprays of butter spray, some salt and pepper and another shake of that Reduced Fat Parm Cheese.  That’s all you’ll need!

Deelish! Super fancy on our paper plates 🙂

Thank you, Instagram!

Village Whiskey

I have totally been avoiding this post.  Every time I look at these pictures, I don’t know if I want to Alex Mack into my phone and transport to Village Whiskey or if I want to go run 8 miles knowing that I ate all of it.

My family and our family friends went to Village Whiskey back for Memorial Day Weekend.  Yes, it was that long ago.  While this was probably one of the most fun dinners ever, it also happened to be one of the best.  I love this place, and I’m not surprised; Village Whiskey is one of Iron Chef Jose Garces’ signature restaurants.  He is the best.  If you didn’t have a chance to read about my trip with Allie to Amada for Restaurant Week this spring, check it out now and you’ll want to try a Garces Restaurant too!

Dave and I before heading over

We had so much fun!!!!!!!!

Just us girls, myself, Becky, and Mellie (my sister!)

We actually went to the Village Whiskey at the new casino in AC, Revel.  We started off with some Margarita’s from another Garces place, Distrito.  Making our way through the new casino we tried drinks at a few other bars then finally at Village Whiskey- the Philly Fish House Punch for the girls: Myer’s Dark Rum, Peach Brandy, Cognac, Tea, Lemon and Spiced Sugar.

check out that milkshake… whatttttttttttttt!

My Dad being my Dad ordered a S’More Milkshake, and OMG was it the most ridiculous thing ever (well, wait until we get to my burger).  It was the thickest, creamiest, sweetest milkshake I’ve ever tasted.  The flavor of S’Mores was dead-on, down to the burnt-marshmallow taste.  WOW!

Next up were our appetizers.  We ordered a few items from the “Pickle” Menu and some Oysters too.  The Pickles are served with Black Olive Tapenade, Whipped Ricotta and Toasted Sourdough.  The three we ordered included the Herb Cherry Tomatoes, the Golden Beets & Jicama, and my favorite, the Baby Carrots, Jalapeno, & Strawberries.  It is worth going to Village Whiskey, even if you’re only going to order “pickles”.  They were all fantastic.  They also come in mason jars which are adorable.  Whoops, forgot to mention, we tried the House-Made Cheese Puffs too.  Holy hell.  (adding 20 more minutes to tonight’s workout)

Oooooey Gooooooey Cheese Puffs

The picture on the left is my plate including a little bit of each of the pickles.

If you think this wasn’t enough food already, watch out.  Here come the DUCK FAT FRIES.  Yup.  Duck. Fat. Fries.  Well, shit.  They were f***ing fantastic.  The Sly Fox Cheddar Sauce rivals the signature Chickies and Pete’s melted American.  I swear.  These fries are BOMB!

Uhhhh omg! Check out these fries. WOW

Almost everyone ordered a burger, and although at this point I could have called it a night, I was so drunk and excited for mine… that I ate the ENTIRE THING.  Bahhhhh!  Dave created his own with Long Hots and Bacon… Josh tried the Veggie Burger…  while I went for the mammoth Whiskey King (Maple Bourbon Glazed Cipollini, Rogue Bleu Cheese, Applewood Bacon, Foie Gras… and oh… I added a fried egg?!?! WTF?!?!)  I don’t even know, the entire burger was a rich and creamy blur… every bite was more unbelievable than the next.  I’m telling you, this is by FAR THE BEST BURGER I’VE EVER EATEN.  I’m pretty sure there is no way I could have calculated this one into Weight Watchers Points.  Whoops!

Josh’s Veggie burger, how pretty is that?

Dave’s Burger

uhhhhhhhhhh my Mammoth burger. WHOA!!!!

Post-popping the egg…. wowwww

Damn.  Now I’m hungry!  Village Whiskey @ Revel rocked and I cannot wait to go back to the one in Philly… that is if I ever can afford the calories again!!!!!!!!

4th of July

I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July!  Here in Philly, it was as hot as Will Smith was kicking alien butt in Independence Day (haaaaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaa).

Seriously though, that is the best movie ever.  I was really happy AMC had it on last night.

Although I unfortunately had to work this holiday, I was able to sneak in a much-needed workout:  a spin class with my favorite instructor where I burned over 700 calories.  🙂

ready, set, spin!

patriotic! as fancy as my nails get 🙂

After work, my family and I made a visit with our family friends to the pool I grew up going to.  It was weird being there, without all of our friends, not knowing anyone, and seeing all of the changes.  Dave, Sammy, and I took a few turns off of the diving board and I finally finished the Rob Lowe book.  Everyone- read it.  It’s SO AMAZING.

We showered up, and drove down to Chesapeake City, MD for some hard shell crabs.  It is a family tradition and one of my favorite meals EVER.  The Tap Room is the restaurant we go to, and they are awesome.  The tables are covered with a brown-paper bag-like table cloth, and pouring your ketchup directly onto the table is encouraged.

Some of us order MD Crab Soup, Corn on the Cob, French Fries, and the best Onion Rings out there.  Everything is covered in Old Bay and is super salty and delicious.

Alan fixes up his soup and Sammy shows off one of his 8 crabs he devoured!

yum yum yum! Fries, Steamers, Onion Rings, and MUSSELS!

This batch of crabs were “Jumbos”, one of the biggest sizes out there.  We ordered two dozen seasoned, which of course means they are doused with more Old Bay.  I am telling you, I’ve been eating crabs for years… these were the BEST crabs I’ve ever eaten.  OMG.  They were not only huge but so meaty and sweet and juicy.

The town itself is a little strange… there is never anyone outside, except for on their boats or in the bar.  They do have one beautiful view of the Chesapeake!

PRETTY! Notice my smile is a little off! Still getting used to the invisalign… didn’t even notice I was smiling funny.
